My Wine Experience

    Hello everyone, my name is Ryan Wilson, and I'm excited to get posting on this blog throughout the semester. I am a senior here at Virginia Tech and am on track to graduate in the spring. Sad, I know. Until then, I will be trying various wines and posting my thoughts on them here so be on the lookout! A little insight about me, I'm from Vienna, Virginia, and have lived there my whole life. I'm also the oldest of 3 brothers with one of them being a current sophomore here with me!

    Onto my experience with wine, I don't really have that much as I am newly 21 and more of a beer guy myself. However, my mom likes wine, so I've had some glasses of chardonnay, pinot grigio, and prosecco with her while at home for breaks. Those wines were nice, but it's still not my favorite beverage if I were to go grab a beverage. With that being said, I definitely enjoy white wines more than reds, I think the reds that I've had have been too bitter for me.

So through completing assignments over this semester, I'm very excited to expand my knowledge of the different types and varieties of wines. To go along with that I hope my enjoyment of wine also expands so it becomes more of a regular beverage in my rotation when I hangout with friends and family. So buckle up, and be on the lookout for my first tasting post!

Wine Tasting #7 - Il Forte

  Il Forte Cortese Gavi, Italy $17.85 Bowlerwine.com describes this wine as " 100% Cortese. The grapes used in this classic example of Gavi grew in the shadow of “Il Forte,” the iconic fortress that towers over the region’s namesake village. Cool temperature fermentation for 20 days, aging in steel through the winter months.  Bright, balanced, aromatic, fruity wine. Floral aromas, with delicate scents of lemon, green apple, honey; notes of almonds in the finish." Right off the bat, I knew that I was going to enjoy this wine. It had a nice caramel kind of scent on the nose which I actually enjoyed. With that being said I thought it was going to be very sweet and more along the lines of a desert-ish wine but it really wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. Wine Tasting #5 - Stella Mia

  Evviva Stella Mia Prosecco Italy 2019 $10.99      Tastings.com describes this wine as having a  pale straw color. Aromas of dried lemon, diced pear, straw, and bread dough with a supple, bright, dryish light body and a sleek, breezy panettone finish with no oak flavor. An easy-drinking Prosecco quaffer for any time indulging.     The first thing I got when sniffing this wine was pear, which is one of the dominant flavors as Wine Folly mentions in its section on Prosecco (pg. 52-53). I also got a little bit of a floral scent in the later few sniffs. Then sipping the wine pear was again a dominant flavor, but I also got a little bit of apple which was kind of a nice addition. This was a nice, light wine and the carbonation added a nice mouthfeel while making the wine taste a bit less sweet. While I enjoyed this wine, there was a little bit of a metallicy aftertaste which kind of threw me off, but overall would drink this again.

Wine Tasting #11 - Lone Birch

Lone Birch Riesling Yakima Valley 2022 $11      Wine Enthusiast describes this Riesling as   a stunning Riesling value, with wonderful aromas of nectarines, rose water, orange sorbet and a hint of clove. It has sweet red-grapefruit and strawberry flavors, with a touch of residual sugar. The wine's bold acidity qualifies as life affirming. Great stuff.      I would have to agree with Wine Enthusiast's review on the value of this Riesling. I very much enjoyed it, and for $11 I enjoyed it even more. It had a very crisp scent, and I got a lot of apple on the nose, and it was also a decently floral aroma. This was a pretty light-bodied wine that was decently sweet but then seemed a touch acidic on the finish. The flavor that stood out the most to me was the apple, which is listed on Wine Folly as one of the dominant flavors for a Riesling (pg. 88-89). Like I mentioned earlier, I thoroughly enjoyed drinking this wine and I'll definitely buy it again.
